The Philodendron Melanochrysum is a striking variety of Philodendron that many collectors are desperate to cross off their wishlist. The now accepted botanical name, ‘Melanochrysum’ hails from the Greek word ‘Melano’ meaning black and ‘Chrysum’ meaning golden. This is why you might hear this plant commonly referred to as the 'Black Gold' Philodendron. Mature forms of this species exhibit a dazzling display of black and gold flecks when struck by sunlight, hence the name!
The leaves always start small and are dark green, almost black, crystalline leaves that stand out with a bright yellow vein, long in shape with a green backside. Yellow veins form a unique pattern. As this plant grows, its leaves will lengthen into that signature cordatum shape with a coppery sheen and pale green veins.
Plant care
Philodendron Melanochrysum thrives best in indirect light (no direct sunlight for this one or having it too close to your grow light as its delicate velvety leaves won’t appreciate it), increased humidity and warm temperatures, ideally above 18 degrees. Moreover, an airy well-draining potting mix is important. It helps in keeping the soil moist without making it soggy.
